PHILLY HIP HOP--WHAT HAPPENED???

I AM A 35 YR OLD MALE BORN AND RAISED IN PHILLY AND STILL RESIDE IN PHILLY.  THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA PRODUCED PLENTY OF GOOD HIP HOP ARTISTS/GROUPS LIKE SCHOOLY D, WILL SMITH AKA THE FRESH PRINCEE.S.T.( 3 TIMES DOPE),  COOL CSTEADY B, RAM SQUAD, BLACK THOUGHT (THE ROOTS) EVE,  BAHAMADIA, BEANIE SIGEL THAT'S JUST SOME IT'S MANY MORE.  I WAS LUCKY TO BE BORN IN THAT ERA TO WITNESS THOSE TALENTED ARTISTS COME THRU PHILLY.  I WAS PROUD TO REP MY CITY ON THE HIP HOP TIP BACK THEN.  I MEAN PHILLY REALLY HAD THEIR OWN STYLE.  PHILLY ARTISTS HELD THEIR OWN AGAINST NEW YORK ARTISTS.  NOT ONLY WERE PHILLY HIP HOP ARTISTS MAKING A NAME FOR THEMSELVES,  PHILLY DJ'S WERE WINNING SOME OF THE BIGGEST DJ CONTESTS AROUND THE WORLD.  TWO OF THE MOST POPULAR DJ'S FROM PHILLY WERE DJ CASH MONEY AND DJ JAZZY JEFF. THE PHILLY HIP HOP CULTURE IN THE 80'S & EARLY 90'S WAS MAJOR IN EVERY HOOD ESPECIALLY AT THE HOOD BLOCK PARTIES.  THE BLOCK PARTIES BACK THEN WERE LIKE MANY HIP HOP SHOWS AND IT WAS ALL LOVE.

NOW IN THE YEAR '97 I STARTED TO SEE A CHANGE IN THE PHILLY HIP HOP SCENE,  PHILLY ARTISTS STARTED SOUNDING A LITTLE DIFFERENT.  THE SHINY SUIT ERA OF HIP HOP WAS BIRTHED BY SEAN 'PUFFY' COMBS AROUND THIS TIME AND IT CAUSED SOME PHILLY ARTISTS TO WANNA DO THINGS DIFFERENT.  I REMEMBER A LOT OF UP AND COMING ARTISTS FROM PHILLY ALL STARTED TO WANNA SOUND LIKE BIGGIE CAUSE OF BIGGIE BEING AT THE HEIGHT OF HIS CAREER AROUND THIS TIME.  PHILLY RADIO DJ'S STARTED TO PLAY LESS AND LESS OF THE LOCAL TALENT.  THEN THE NEXT YEAR '98 THE BIGGEST RAPPER IN PHILLY WAS BEANIE SIGEL.  THEY STARTED CALLING HIM THE PHILLY BIGGIE,  I WASN'T BELIEVING THE HYPE ABOUT HIM UNTIL I STARTED HEARING A BUNCH OF FREESTYLES BY HIM.  THEN I COULDN'T WAIT TO HEAR HIS DEBUT ALBUM.  BEANIE SIGEL DIDN'T DISAPPOINT WITH HIS DEBUT ALBUM "THE TRUTH" IT WAS AN INSTANT CLASSIC.  BEANS HAD THE CITY POPPING, PLUS AROUND THE SAME TIME FEMALE RAPPER EVE WHO SIGNED TO THE RUFF RYDERS JUST RELEASED HER DEBUT ALBUM WHICH WAS AN STANDOUT DEBUT ALBUM TOO.  SO THE PHILLY HIP HOP SCENE WAS LOOKING PROMISING GOING INTO THE NEW MILLENNIUM.  THE EARLY 2000'S WE SEEN SUCCESS WITH BEANIE SIGEL'S STATE PROPERTY GROUP.  RAPPERS EVE AND BEANIE SIGEL BROUGHT THE SPOTLIGHT BACK TO PHILLY WHICH HELPED PHILLY UNDERGROUND GROUP RAM SQUAD FEATURING TALENTED VETERAN RAPPER TOMMY HILL GET A MAJOR DEAL FROM UNIVERSAL RECORDS.  THEN NORTH PHILLY GROUP MAJOR FIGURES GOT SOME NATIONAL ATTENTION WITH THE SONG AND VIDEO "YEAH THAT'S US" BEING PLAYED ON THE B.E.T. NETWORK AND THE GROUP PHILLY'S MOST WANTED PUT OUT A HIT SINGLE "ACROSS THE BORDER".  THIS NEW ERA OF PHILLY HIP HOP WAS LOOKING GOOD AND WAS COMPETING HARD WITH THE COMPETITION.

BY THE YEAR '06 THE PHILLY HIP HOP SCENE ENTERED A NEW PHASE IN HIP HOP WITH A NEW CAST OF RAPPERS.  THIS PHASE I CALL IT THE "YOUTUBE BATTLE RAPPER PHASE"  THE NEW CAST OF PHILLY RAPPERS STARTED FILMING THEIR OWN FREESTYLES OR RAP BATTLES AND PUTTING THEM ON YOUTUBE.  NOW PHILLY IS TALKED ABOUT ONCE AGAIN FOR THE NEW POPULAR FREESTYLES.  SOME OF THE NEW CAST OF RAPPERS WERE: REED DOLLAZ,  E NESS, CHIC RAW,  VODKA,  YOUNG HOT,  JOEY JIHAD, CYSSERO,  HOLLO MAN AND MEEK MILLZ.  PHILLY WAS THE TALK OF THE INTERNET WITH THESE YOUTUBE VIDEOS,  IT GAVE A LOT OF THESE RAPPERS A CRAZY BUZZ WITHOUT EVEN GETTING ON THE RADIO.  THIS PHASE HAD EVERYBODY IN PHILLY THINKING THEY COULD MAKE IT IN THE RAP GAME.  SOME OF THESE RAPPERS EVEN GOT DEALS OUT OF THEIR CRAZY YOUTUBE BUZZ.  I MEAN A LOT OF THEM WERE VICIOUS SPITTERS BUT WHEN IT CAME TO GOING TO THE STUDIO AND CREATING A COMPLETE SOLID SONG,  IT WASN'T GOOD.  EVEN TO THIS DAY PHILLY RAPPERS ARE STILL MAKING THOSE YOUTUBE VIDEOS BUT CAN'T GET OUT THAT FREESTYLE/BATTLE MODE.  THE RECORD LABELS LIKE TO SEE THAT CRAZY ARTIST BUZZ SO THEY GO AND SIGN THESE DUDES AND FIND OUT THEY CANT MAKE A HIT RECORD.  HIT RECORDS ARE WHAT MAKES THE RECORD LABELS MONEY. SO, IF THAT RAPPER CAN ONLY BE GOOD AT MAKING YOUTUBE VIDEOS, THEN THATS WHAT THAT RAPPER WILL CONTINUE TO DO.   PHILLY RAPPERS ALWAYS HAD THEIR OWN STYLE BUT THIS NEW ERA STARTED TO ONLY ADOPT THE MOST POPULAR STYLE IN HIP HOP.  IF THE SOUTH RAPPERS WERE POPPING, THEN YOU STARTED HEARING PHILLY RAPPERS RAP LIKE THEY FROM THE SOUTH.  THAT NEVER WAS PHILLY STYLE, THE ARTIST HERE ALWAYS HAD A ABUNDANCE OF ORIGINALITY.  BUT MOST RECENTLY THE STYLE HERE IN PHILLY NOW IS TO RAP ABOUT THE MOST CRACK/COKE YOU PUSHING OR KILLING SOMEONE ON EVERY OTHER RAP LINE.  EVERY PHILLY RAPPER NOW SOUND THE SAME,  SO ITS HARD TO REALLY GET INTO SOMEONE FROM PHILLY CAUSE IT JUST SOUNDS LIKE U LISTENING TO THE SAME SONG BUT A DIFFERENT RAPPER.  SO FAR OUT OF THAT NEW CAST FROM '06 MEEK MILLZ IS THE MOST SUCCESSFUL ONE.  EVERY SINCE MEEK SIGNED TO RICK ROSS'S LABEL MMG HE HASN'T BEEN LOOKING BACK.  BUT EVEN WITH THE SUCCESS WITH MEEK I STILL HAVE NOT REALLY SEEN GROWTH IN HIM YET, HOPEFULLY HE WILL SHOW THAT ON HIS NEW ALBUM "DREAMS & NIGHTMARES"
