Is Good Kid, Maad City Album A Classic? #KendrickLamar #TDE
It's been 5 years since Kendrick released his official commercial debut album. I asked myself is "Good Kid, Maad City" a classic album and is it too early to claim it a classic. Before I get into answering those questions, I got to talk about how I was still captivated by K Dot's first album "Section .80" when the official debut album came out. I still feel like Kendrick's first two albums are comparable to Nas's first two albums "Illmatic" and "It Was Written" meaning their first albums were not met with commercial success. Their second albums had huge commercial success. So with me getting that explanation out the way, yes I think "Good Kid, Maad City" is a classic. I know some people have their own qualifications for claiming albums to be classic. I consider a album to be on classic level by it's creativity, originality, timeless sound and the effect on culture. Kendrick Lamar created an album that fits all my qualities for a classic album. I will go far as to say for this Decade not only will GKMC be considered a classic but his recent album "Damn" will be looked at as a classic. K Dot has hugely stamped his footprints in music and culture. Some may say it's too early to give him this much praise but when you follow his impressive music catalog, it speaks for itself. From Section .80 to Damn, he has released back to back successful albums and the best thing about them all, is each album sounds so different. Being different generates talk first but being a great different invokes a shift in culture.
